On Saturday I popped up to Highbury for Park Run.
(for those who don’t know, Park Run is a weekly group 5k for running enthusiasts)
As people were milling I heard a convo from a group next to me.
Everyone was introducing each other.
And my ears pricked up…
A guy in the group gestured to another guy and said “This is Bob. He used to be my boss”.
Bob gestured back and said “This is Darren. He’s now my boss”.
I don’t know how this came about…
But I thought it was interesting…
Because it’s unusual for your boss to become your junior.
My initial reaction was surprise.
And then I started thinking…
It must suck to be Bob.
After all, the more senior you are, the more respect you command.
I remember this vividly from my time in the City.
Colleagues held in awe…
Just because of their job title.
And Bob being leapfrogged makes it really obvious the balance of power has shifted.
I thought about what could have caused this.
Maybe Bob has a lack of ambition…
He wasn’t playing “the game”…
Or he wasn’t a very good leader.
But then it dawned on me…
Could I have the situation backwards?
Maybe Bob wasn’t chasing more money or status...
He probably didn’t give two hoots what anyone else thought…
And I doubt he cared if he was respected based on where he appeared on a structure chart.
In fact, Bob might be living his dream.
By doing a job which makes him happy…
And not worrying about climbing the corporate ladder just because other people are.
Bob’s doing what’s right for him.
But you know what?
Darren probably is too.
Getting a promotion is certainly an accomplishment.
I’m sure Darren feels a lot of pride and he’s probably enjoying some nice perks.
So with this being said...
What’s my point?
It all boils down to this…
You’ve got to have the courage to do what’s right for you.
Don’t worry about what other people think…
Or do something just because it’s “normal” or “expected”.
Bob and Darren were both having a good laugh about the situation.
Because even though it’s unusual, it seemed to suit them both.
And I think that’s pretty awesome.
Something to think about.
Alright, that’s all I’ve got for you today.
I’ve got to run and buy my sister a birthday present.
Enjoy your Thursday.
