Have you ever had a sip of wine and struggled to tell the various notes or flavours?
Then someone reads the label, scans the bottle on Vivino or asks the sommelier…
And you find out the wine has notes of apricot, dandelion and tobacco.
You have another sip…
And suddenly you can taste the apricot.
You can’t taste dandelion…
But is that a hint of tobacco?
Maybe it is.
You’re starting to notice flavours you didn’t notice before.
So why can you only taste apricot after being told about the apricot flavour?
The reason is
this:
You now have awareness where you did not have awareness before.
The wine always had notes of apricot.
It was only when this was brought to your attention that you could taste them.
You may be wondering… where’s Tom going with this?
Well, what’s true for flavours is also true for ideas.
You need to be aware an idea exists before you start to notice it in action.
And once you notice an idea in action, you can decide whether you agree with it or not.
So I think of these emails a bit like tasting wine.
I’m sharing thoughts and ideas. And I’m doing this to bring awareness to them.
This email is an example. It’s bringing awareness to the idea of awareness.
Some of these ideas may click (like the apricot).
And some of them may not (like the
dandelion).
Perhaps you’ve never tasted dandelion so you have no frame of reference and need to be exposed to it a few more times…
Perhaps your taste buds can’t detect dandelion, so you’ll never notice it…
Or perhaps you don’t like the taste of dandelion. It’s disagreeable to you and you’d rather be drinking a different glass of wine.
It doesn’t really matter.
Because even if some of the ideas in these emails don’t stick, I hope some of them will.
And I hope you’ll find some of these ideas agreeable (just like the apricot).
So
keep an eye out for them.
After all, who doesn’t like trying a new glass of wine?
