“I just quit my job...
I'm gonna find new drive...
Damn, they work me so damn hard...
Work by nine, then off past five...
And they work my nerves...
That's why I cannot sleep at night".
There’s a shift happening in the world of work right now.
It’s covered in a Guardian
article published today (hat tip to Peter for this one)…
A Fortune Magazine article published
yesterday…
And even Beyoncé is singing about it.
More and more millennials are turning their back on their jobs…
And going after greater meaning, purpose and fulfilment in life.
I don’t think this is surprising.
When I quit my job, it was a big driver for me too.
So, why is this happening?
Well, millennials are more motivated by purpose than any other generation…
(there are various studies to back this up)
And they're voting with their feet.
Now, “purpose” means different things to different people.
For instance…
It could mean enjoying what you do each day…
…deepening connections with others…
…making a difference in the community…
…doing work which is worthwhile…
…or even making a beneficial change to the world at large.
But whatever “purpose” means to you, my take is this:
More and more millennials want to feel connected to their work.
That’s the bottom line.
So the question millennials are increasingly asking themselves is…
Do I feel connected to my work?
And it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Because a lot of surveys also show that millennials are more likely to leave their jobs if this connection isn't present...
And to KEEP leaving jobs until they find a job where it is.
So if I was in the hiring team at a big company and wanted to attract and retain younger talent…
The number one thing I’d focus on is making sure the job has meaning…
And the work has purpose…
Because I think this trend will only continue.
What do you think? It’s an interesting topic and I’d love to get some views.
Just hit reply and let me know what came to mind when you read this email.
That’s it for today…
I’m going to wrap this up.
Enjoy your Tuesday.
