The story is different.
My time is definitely decreasing.
And that’s pretty cool.
Now here’s the interesting thing.
If I compare two adjacent sessions…
There’s lots of examples of my speed going down.
Which suggests my progress is reversing.
This could make me frustrated...
And frustration could lead to giving up.
Which would be a bit of a bummer, because then my speed will never increase.
But the truth is…
The opposite is happening.
Sure, my speed might go down every now and then.
But these are bumps along the way. They don’t show the bigger picture.
The real takeaway here is…
Progress isn’t linear.
Sometimes you’ll go backwards.
And sometimes you’ll stay steady for weeks.
But if you zoom out…
And look from beginning to end…
You’ll see how far you’ve actually come.
This may be obvious in fitness, but it’s relevant in other parts of life too.
The FTSE100 is a great example.
It’s up 1% this month…
Down 3% this year…
Up 4% in the last 12 months…
And up 566% lifetime.
You need to zoom out to see the full picture.
And this even applies to things which aren’t easy to measure.
A project at work is a good example.
Because when you’re in the thick of it, there will always be twists and turns...
Moving backwards to move forwards…
Or obstacles which seem unmanageable at the time.
But when you zoom out…
And you see how much progress you’ve already made with the project…
What seems like a huge obstacle close-up turns into a blip on the radar.
And I think it's helpful to keep this in mind.
