This mistake could be stopping you taking the next step in your career.
And while it may seem obvious, the idea completely passed me by.
Let me tell you what I mean…
I’ve signed up for the Hackney Half Marathon and I’ve started
using the Nike Running App to train.
A couple of my buddies recommended the app.
The oracle himself (my PT Zack) suggested it too.
The app is pretty cool.
It has all sorts of guided runs and training programmes. And you can create you very own running schedule.
When you run, you have a voice in your ear telling you how far to run that day, how hard to push and when to ease up.
(shame it doesn’t tell you when you’re about to be hit by a cyclist, but
maybe that’s coming in version 2)
Now, I was already in a pretty good routine with my running.
Jogging by the canal a couple of times a week…
Park runs on Saturday mornings…
And a 10k every couple of months.
But my running time had stalled. I wasn't making much progress.
And using the app has made me realise there was something crucial missing:
My running routine was missing
structure.
Most of the time I was just “going for a run” rather than thinking about how and how far I should be running.
Sure, I’d try to run as fast as I could. But that’s not the way to get faster or train for a half-marathon.
The way to get faster and train is by having structure in place.
And you know what?
Having structure is working. Because earlier this week I hit my lowest 5k time in 6 months.
Of course, there’s value in not having structure too.
If I ran enough without the app I’m sure my time would still go down. At least for a while.
Plus going for a run can be fun by itself. I don’t always need to get quicker.
But when you have a goal like a half marathon…
Then structure IS
important.
And the same is true in work and life.
