Let me take you back a few thousand years to ancient Greece.
Petros the farmer is tending his orchards. His plums and pears are looking juicy and ripe.
Perfect timing for Petros, because he needs some new threads. His farming togs are full of holes and fraying at the edges.
As luck would have it, Theodoros the Tailor
is feeling peckish. He’s ready to stock his larder with some fresh, tasty groceries.
And once an exchange rate has been struck between Petros and Theodoros (say 18 plums and 12 pears for a new pair of overalls), a deal can be done.
This is how life was back then. Every day was trading and bartering.
Over time, trading goods and services morphed into trading objects which could be
re-traded.
And currency was born. In the form of shells, beads or precious metals. Or even salt (hence the word “salary” and the phrase “worth your salt”).
That was a few thousand years ago and not much has changed since.
Sure, you’re probably not trading plums.
But you are trading your time. Every minute of every day.
And the trade that dominates most people’s lives is trading time for money.
“I’ll give you some money” your employer or client says, “just give me some of your time”.
But we make countless other trades too.
You might trade your time for health (going to yoga or for a run)…
Or for your social life (hanging out with friends)…
Or for leisure, rest and relaxation (putting your feet up in front of Married At First Sight with a glass of Chablis).
Which is why it’s time – not money – which is the real currency of life.
Simply put: the better you are at managing your time, the more trades you can make. And the more options you give yourself.
