On the 8th January, I sent out an email called “My dishwasher breaks down. Eye-opening insights ensue”.
Today is the 30th January.
The calendar at the bottom right of my laptop screen tells me that's 22 days.
And I have to report that my dishwasher is still not fixed.
I’ve had a good poke around inside. But I don't think this is where the problem lies.
I think it’s the plumbing.
The idea of de-attaching the
dishwasher to pull it out of its recess, manoeuvre it onto its side and rummage through all the tubes doesn’t as much fill me with dread as it does with complete and utter disinterest.
But as the days have ticked by and after some gentle (*ahem*) encouragement from Lauren, I bit the bullet.
I had a bit of time on Sunday so I took a look.
First course of action: switching the dishwasher back on and running a load. Just in case it had magically fixed itself.
After all, you never know.
And guess what?
It started working! Problem solved.
Until 45 minutes later I heard a “click”, followed by silence, and then an unmistakable beeeeeeeeeep which told me that the dishwasher was, in fact, still broken.
Dammit!
I was feeling very smug. I thought I’d cheated the system and found a shortcut.
But I was wrong. Lesson learnt.
Let's face it: there are better ways to solve our problems than
by crossing our fingers and doing nothing.
I’m not just talking about dishwashers. The same is true far beyond the kitchen too.
Whatever the challenge, waiting 22 days, 222 days or 2,222 days and hoping that
something good will happen all by itself isn’t usually a winning strategy.
Sometimes a little bit of effort is needed. And sometimes a little effort can go a long way.
This is where coaching comes in.
Coaching has been a game-changer for me and it's simpler than you might think.
In fact, my coaching is relatively idler-friendly. All it really involves is firing up a Zoom call and having a chat.
But that chat still has to happen.
If you’re done with the waiting game, here’s where to go:

That’s all for today.
