I was flicking around the internet this morning, as I often do, and came across a curious snippet of Welsh-related tomfoolery.
You may or may not know that many road signs in Wales are
written in Welsh and English.
Case in point:
In 2006, cyclists pedalling to the Barons Court roundabout between Penarth and Cardiff were surprised to spot the following road sign:
CYCLISTS DISMOUNT
LLID Y BLEDREN DYMCHWELYD
Why was this sign so surprising?
Because llid y bledren is Welsh for “inflammation of the bladder”.
In 2008, a similar sign in Swansea displayed the following:
NO ENTRY FOR HEAVY GOOD VEHICLES. RESIDENTIAL SITE ONLY.
NID WYF YN Y SWYDDFA AR HYN O BRYD. ANFONWCH UNRHYW WAITH I’W GYFIETHU.
The English translation?
“I'm not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated"
Very helpful, wouldn’t you say?
Anyway, it’s not just dodgy Welsh road signs which can leave us feeling lost when we’re trying to find the right direction.
Forget these road signs for a moment.
When it comes to life more
generally, sometimes it can feel like there's too many options. It’s not a question of turning left or right, but finding the right direction from a roundabout with 100s of exits.
Other times there’s so much conflicting advice and mixed messages that it starts to look like there isn’t a path forward at all.
And then there’s us.
Ever feel like you don’t know what you really want? That the guidance and perspective of friends, family and colleagues is muddying the waters rather than making things clearer? And that as time ticks by, you feel more disconnected from
yourself and what’s important to you?
I've certainly had my own fair share of confusion and disorientation over the years.
All of which prompts the question:
How to find the right direction when the signs are so confusing?
Here’s my suggestion:
Try ignoring the signs and look the other
way.
In other words:
Take your attention off all the options, mixed messages & guidance out there, settle down and see what bubbles up from inside you instead.
If you’d like some guidance with this, I can help.
In a world full of dilemmas, contradictions, ambiguity & conflicting advice, my coaching offers an antidote.
It’s a way to help you cut through the noise and get crystal clear on the direction you want to head in.
