On my bedside table there’s a copy of Rick Rubin’s book The Creative Act: A Way of Being
A few years back, MTV named Rick Rubin the “most important music producer of the last
20 years”. The guy has worked with countless artists and bands, including Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Strokes and Aerosmith.
If anyone knows a thing or two about creativity, it’s Rick.
His book is jam-packed with
musings all about the creative process.
Last night I flicked a few pages in, started reading and came across this gem all about the source of creative ideas:
We are channelling energetic material that can’t be
physically grasped. It defies logic, in the same way that an electron can be in two places at once. This elusive energy is of great worth, though so few people are open enough to hold it.
How do we pick up on a signal that can neither be heard nor defined? The answer is not to look for it. Nor do we attempt to predict or analyze
our way into it. Instead, we create an open space that allows it. A space so free of the normal overpacked condition of our minds that it functions as a vacuum, drawing down the ideas that the universe is making available.
My open space?
I have at least two.
I’ve found that going for a stroll by the canal – phone away, nothing on my mind – inevitably leads to fresh ideas and new thoughts popping up.
The
other?
Stepping into the shower.
It’s remarkable how often I turn on the tap, mosey on under the water and *poof* - a new idea pops right into my weary head from absolutely nowhere, and it’s the perfect thought or idea for
whatever it is I’m working on.
Which most of the time happens to be related to my daily emails.
(lucky you!)
Anyway, I don’t think this open space is limited to walks and showers.
You might have your own examples. Going for a drive is a common one too.
But it’s amazing what ideas can pop up
and where these ideas can take us when we create some space away from our busy minds and the hustle & bustle of life.
In a lot of ways, this open space is what I offer my clients whenever we jump on a zoom call.
And
it's what I’d like to offer you now.
Here’s what I mean:
Can I listen to you for an hour? Can I give you a space to think about your life and a space for you to discover & explore what you’d love to have in your
life which you don’t have today?
During our hour together I might ask you an occasional question.
And, if I have your permission and I hear anything worth pointing out to you, I might do that too.
This is, in a nutshell, what happens on a Discovery Call with me.
If you’re interested, the first step is joining my waiting list.

That’s all for today.
