“It’s no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society”
So said the Indian writer, philosopher and enlightened mystic Jiddu Krishnamurti.
And I can’t help think he’s
right.
Here’s what I mean:
1. Distraction is the default. We’re pulled in a million directions by notifications and “breaking news” about a cat up a tree. Then society blames US for it and tells us to “focus more” or
“get better at time management you hopeless procrastinator!”. And the kicker is we’ve got so used to this chaos, we just call it “life”
2. Decisiveness is now a badge of honour and hesitation is a sign of weakness. Society has a crush on the confident, quick decision-maker, always charging forward like the proverbial bull in a china shop (smash
first, reflect later).
But it’s precisely this rush to race through a crossroads that gets us in trouble.
The irony? The smartest, healthiest decisions come when we’re brave enough to hang out in
the uncertainty instead
3. Planning has become a cultural craze. If you’re not buried in a calendar, mapping out your 5 year goals or colour coding your to-do list, you’re slacking. But this is a symptom of a society that craves control over clarity and predictability over presence.
Truth is, the more we plan, the less we live. Real living happens when you’re in the here and now, not when you’re scheduling your “relax and have fun” time
4. Hustle culture is rife. It’s all podcasts, self-help books and random people on LinkedIn bragging
about getting up at 4am and jabbering on about the “rise and grind”, “eat, sleep, hustle, repeat” and how “success never sleeps”. Productivity is like a new religion and if you’re not always doing, you’re failing.
Of course, I’ve nothing against hard work or being productive. But working yourself into a caffeine-fuelled stupor or
burning yourself out isn’t what I’d call healthy
5. Fitting in has become the real epidemic. Yes, we’re getting meta here, but this is probably the “sickest” of them all. When you’re following the same script and chasing the same career, lifestyle, relationships and overall societal template as everyone else, you end up with a life that might look
great on paper but doesn’t feel like yours
Cor blimey!
No wonder we can feel so stuck.
And the worst part?
We soak this up without even realising.
