I use a secret weapon to write my daily emails.
It’s not my triple shot morning coffee.
It’s not my battered old copy of the Oxford English Dictionary which props up my monitor.
It’s not even ChatGPT.
Oh no. It’s something far more deadly.
My daily email secret weapon
is…
Lauren!
Barely a week goes by without me asking Lauren to cast her beady eye over a draft email.
I want to check my writing is clear, won’t put you to sleep and might even raise a smile or spark a small lightbulb moment when you’re scrolling in line at Pret or frittering away a few minutes while dropping the kids off at the pool.
Lauren is a great barometer of what works and what doesn’t.
She’ll even come up with a cheeky or insightful suggestion herself sometimes.
Funny thing is, after two and a half years of being subjected to reading & hearing me natter on about my daily emails, I’ve noticed a few sharp ideas have
lingered around in Lauren’s lively brain too.
There are times, for instance, when I’ll be chatting about something on my mind as we slurp an evening bowl of ramen. And when I’ve finished my piece, Lauren will pipe up and say:
You know what Tom? That’s just your thinking.
And I’ll smile. How the tables have turned!
But inevitably Lauren is right.
It’s actually a great example of how someone else can spot what we miss when we’re too close to it ourselves.
It’s like standing right next to a painting. All you see are the brushstrokes.
But someone standing a few steps back can see the bigger picture. They know that if you take a few steps back, your perspective will change and you’ll probably see the bigger picture too. And that bigger picture is usually more balanced, more vibrant and more meaningful.
Helping you
take a step back is just another way to describe transformative coaching.
