A few weeks ago, Paul Millerd let me gatecrash his newsletter with a guest post.
Paul is the author of the cult classic The Pathless Path. This book is a must-read if you’re questioning the 9 to 5 or hankering after more meaningful work.
In my guest post, I tell the story of how I burnt out, quit my 9 to 5, spent two years travelling the highways and byways of personal development, and then went back to my old employer and old team (even my old boss!) with the benefit of everything I’d learnt.
The post prompted some thoughtful
reader comments like this one:
I'm so glad that you shared this story and perspective. We tend to see grandiose stories about life at the extremes (extreme success or extreme failure) but the "a little off-center" tales are far more common, relatable and believable for most.
But one comment I got was unexpected.
It simply said this:
FYI there were a few typos
Well okay then.
Thing is, my Paul Millerd guest post wasn’t a briefing note for my boss or a dry, technical report about the latest Real Estate market trends (thank god).
The post was hands-on, no-fuss and off-the-cuff. It was writing from the heart.
And if a few typos snuck in, so much the better as far as I’m concerned. It’s proof you’re reading what I wrote and not a focus-grouped memo sterilised to within an inch of its life.
But that’s not all.
I don’t have time to be worrying about typos.
At the moment I’m holding down a full-time banking job, running
mindset workshops for my colleagues, writing these emails, growing my email list, writing guest posts for people like Paul, creating a brand new product (more to come on this soon) and holding 1:1 coaching sessions on evenings & weekends.
Oh yes. And I’m having a baby in January.
(technically Lauren is having the baby, but you know what I mean)
So I pick my battles. If I have a spare 10 mins, I’m not going to pore over my writing for a typo or three.
I’m going to spend it writing. And it’s not even close.
This attitude is why I hit 500 daily emails in August. And it’s why I’ll be writing my 600th, 700th and 800th emails as the typo kings & queens twiddle their thumbs and ponder if the book they’ve wanted to write for
the last 25 years should be in Times New Roman or Garamond.
The upshot?
Those 500+ emails are how I snagged my column in the journal New Escapologist, why daily email maestro John “Bejako” Bejakovic said yes when I asked
if I could run a mindset training for his readers, how I got the “in” to run the second set of Mindset Workshops for my colleagues at work and why I have a growing secondary income stream which helps to keep the fire burning and porridge stocked at Fort Grundy.
Ultimately it’s a bias for action that counts. Not a bias for being typo-free.
Anyway. That’s enuogh about that.
While I’m waxing lyrical about my typo-filled Paul Millerd guest post, I’m going to repeat my offer from yesterday.
If you missed it, here are the details:
I’m on a secret mission right now. I want stressed-out bankers, lawyers, marketers and other professionals to know that it’s 100% possible to find a more relaxed, easy-going approach to work without changing career or quitting their job.
Not only that, but I’m recruiting a few secret agents to join me. And I’ve prepared some off-the-record assets for those who step up.
To join me on my mission, I’d like you to share my Paul Millerd guest post with an audience
interested in topics like careers, stress and finding more balance at work.
Here’s the post:
https://newsletter.pathlesspath.com/p/quitting-and-returning-to-work-guest
That could mean posting a link on your social media feed or in a group you’re part of. If you use an internal messaging board in your job, you could post a link there. Or it could mean emailing or
DM’ing the guest post to someone who has their own audience of relevant people.
Once you’ve done that, forward me a screenshot of your post, email or DM.
In return, you can choose one of the following
exclusive and off-the-record assets for free:
*** A half hour laser coaching session with me on Zoom. This session has genuine, real-world value (I charge £500 for a package of 3 one hour sessions). Laser coaching could be perfect if you want more clarity, you’re facing a tricky decision or you’d like to find more happiness or peace of
mind. To be clear – this is not a consulting call. I won’t be doling out advice. Instead, I’ll help you find the answers that are already inside you
*** A half hour “Rookie Recon” Zoom session. This is perfect if you’re thinking of becoming a coach or starting a newsletter and you’d like to pick my brains. Two
and half years ago I was thinking the same thing and now I’m on the journey. Do I have a newsletter of 100,000 people? Nope. Have I been coaching for the last 30 years? No I haven’t. But I’d argue this is why asking me your questions is 10x more useful than chatting to someone who’s long forgotten what it’s like to be starting out
*** I’ll send you a brand new report I’ve created called Easy Breezy Writer. In the report I reveal 5 mindset “hacks” I’ve picked up from 5 of the world’s leading experts on writing. These hacks have changed the way I approach my writing and explain how I’ve written a chirpy daily email almost every weekday for two and a half years. If you’re a copywriter, newsletter writer or 9-to-5-er who finds writing a grind, Easy Breezy Writer will help
you write with less pressure and more flow
One other thing:
This secret mission will self-destruct at midday UK time on Thursday 28th November.
That’s about 50 hours from now.
Forward me a screenshot of your post or email before then and let me know which off-the-record asset you’d like.
If you send me your screenshot after midday UK time on 28th Nov, it’s too late. The mission will’ve been terminated.
Here’s that link once more to the post I’d like you to share:
