A few weeks ago, I submitted my latest column for New Escapologist.
What, you might ask, is New Escapologist?
New Escapologist is a print journal (that’s right – actual, physical pages!)
published by author, editor and comedian Rob Wringham.
Escapology is the art of getting out of things. And New Escapologist is the journal on the art of getting out of things.
In Rob’s own words:
We don’t think it’s shameful to want enough time in life to read library books, laze around, throw parties, go for walks, pursue our own creative projects or (heaven forbid) better ourselves.
We refute the notion that
being a successful worker-consumer is the height of it all.
Rob practices what he preaches and you can feel this ethos throughout New Escapologist.
If my daily emails are like wolfing down a cheeseburger, New
Escapologist is like sitting by a roaring fire, glass of Malbec in hand, savouring a leisurely Sunday roast.
And if I tell you that guiding lights like Alain de Botton and Will Self have written for New Escapologist, you probably get the idea.
Anyway, after I emailed Rob my column for Issue 17, I got this doozy back the next day:
***
Hello Tom,
What’s a nice guy like you doing putting two spaces after a full-stop? Dirty!
***
Who knew my spacebar was breaking all the rules?
Rob went on to say:
***
Other than that, it's perfect.
Thank you very, very much. I think it’s your best column yet. I’ve decided to run it as the first column of the issue, right after the title page. Lovely stuff and well done.

Phew!
