Here goes:
*** I’m not all that convinced that goals motivate me
*** Spending time thinking about my goals is a great way to procrastinate while kidding myself I’m doing something
useful
*** Every & any goal I set is bounded by my imagination. But there’s a whole world of cool possibilities outside my imagination. So why limit myself?
*** Some of the best stuff that’s happened to me
in the last 2 years (going back to my old job, joining Michael Neill’s certification training) didn’t come from setting a goal. It came from following my nose in the moment and jumping on opportunities that appeared as they appeared
*** Most of my goals used to be means to an end, even if I didn’t realise it at the time. For
instance, my old gym and weight loss goals. These were really just vehicles to hit deeper goals like feeling better about myself. But even when I did lose 10lbs, I didn’t feel all that much better. So why set a goal to feel a certain way when I don't know how I'll feel once I've hit the goal?
*** Adding to this: as it turns out, I can
feel good about myself right now if I want to. We all can. We don’t need to set a goal to do this
*** Adding more to this: setting a goal implies there’s something to do in order to feel happy, or secure, or fulfilled, and so on. But the more I see there’s nothing “to do” to be more of who I already am, the less it looks
like a good idea to set ANY goals. After all, isn’t chasing a goal the ultimate form of “doing”?
All of which takes us back to number 1 and round & round we go.
Perhaps some people will read this list and think
“Tom’s telling us not to set goals”.
But I haven’t said that.
What I have done is suggest a direction to look, offer a perspective and give curious & enquiring minds the chance to reflect.
But what you see is what you see.
And that’s what counts.
As it happens, my coaching
works the same way.
When I coach 1 on 1, I’m not standing at the front of a Zoom classroom, teaching you strategies for success and doling out formulae & advice. Instead, we’re comparing notes, exploring together and seeing whatever we’re meant to see about life, the universe and beyond.

That's all for today. Have an awesome weekend.
