Quite literally.
The sun-soaked streets of London have recently been replaced by a chill in the air.
Feelings about this will range from festive to frosty.
I know some people will be looking forward to digging out their cosy sweaters and spending evenings by a roaring fire drinking hot chocolate and mulled wine.
Others will be dreading the shorter days, frosty windowpanes and freezing
temperatures.
And I’m sure a bunch of people won’t be that fussed either way about the fact that winter is coming.
I’d even wager a goblet of eggnog that those who are looking forward to magical snowfalls might be less
enchanted by the endless slush on the streets and those who are dreading long, dark mornings might sometimes find themselves enjoying the crisp dawn air.
Goes to show:
The same event can spark different reactions in
different people – and even in the same person at different times.
I never really grasped this fact until the penny well and truly dropped a couple of years ago.
See, it always looked like my job – the long hours, endless
meetings and tight deadlines – was causing my stress and frustration.
But seeing how the same situation really can be experienced in a multitude of ways by one person opened my eyes to a new possibility:
Perhaps I had more choice about my experience of my job than I thought I did.
Thing is, what’s true for wintery days in London and late nights in the office is also true for family conflicts, tough relationships, financial pressures, facing our fears, making decisions, navigating change or simply dealing with the twists and turns
of life.
How we experience any of these is completely up for grabs, even if our experience hasn't changed for years.
To my mind there’s huge opportunity and freedom in this.
All of which begs the question:
How would your everyday satisfaction change if you knew your experience of life was in your hands and could shift at a moment’s notice?
