On Thursday, I hopped on a one hour consulting call with Chris Orzechowski.
Chris is a former wrestler and teacher who body-slammed his way out of education into email copywriting and now runs an email marketing agency.
He’s also a New Jersey native.
So no surprise that my call with Orzy (as he’s known) was packed with no-nonsense advice.
I told Orzy about my newsletter, my coaching and how I help
people find less stress, more balance and more fun at work.
“I get it” said Orzy. “But I know tonnes of people whose calendars are jam-packed. They literally have 25 Zoom calls a day, every day. A lot of these people don’t want to fall in love with their Zoom calls. They just want less Zoom calls. You gotta keep that in mind”.
Orzy’s Jersey wisdom has hit the bullseye here.
The way I see it, you’ve got two options if you want to enjoy your work more.
The first is to change your work. That could mean tweaking your current setup. It could also mean finding a new job, changing career or taking the plunge and starting your own business or side hustle.
But maybe the time isn’t right for that. Maybe you don’t want to start again from scratch. Or maybe you know what you
don’t want to do, but you don’t know what you DO want to do.
Which leads to the second option:
Change your experience of work. This is what I call “changing your career without changing your career”.
I coached a client last year who was on the verge of quitting her job. After 3 x 1 hour sessions, she sent me this:

I found
tremendous clarity from the three coaching sessions we had. After we met, I had the paradoxical insight that I was seeking change because I thought my external circumstances were the problem. After our coaching conversations, I realised what I need is stability.
The sessions helped me decide to stay put for now. I still want to make a change but it
makes sense to wait. Since I made that decision, I’ve felt calm and more able to handle the intensity inherent in my job.

I stand by the fact that anyone can have a different relationship with their work in a heartbeat.
But it gets better.
Even if you start to LOVE your work and skip into the office each day with a spring in your step and a twinkle in your eye, this doesn’t stop you from upping sticks and following option 1 at any time if you want
to.
i.e. you can love your job and still decide to change it.
Honestly, this was a holy shit moment for me when I finally saw it.
For most of my life, I thought something needed to be painful, stressful or a struggle in order to change it.
Work was the perfect example.
I waited until my
banking job couldn’t get any worse before I decided to quit. Those few years of splitting headaches, marathon 12 hour days and work haunting my thoughts like a corporate poltergeist is time I’ll never get back.
But I didn’t need to wait for things to get that far.
Now I’m back in the same job, it’s clear that enjoying what I do each day doesn’t mean I need to go along with it forever.
That’s why I’m full steam ahead with this newsletter and my coaching, even though I’m enjoying my job nowadays.
I’d go so far to say that the shift from hating my job to enjoying my job is what led me to build out my newsletter and coaching.
I know that might sound back-to-front.
But it’s seeing fresh, without obstruction, which brings clarity & insight into what we want from life.
If you’re tired of being weighed down by mental clutter and you’d like to enjoy your work more, here's where to go to find out how we can work together:
