The other day I stumbled on a Forbes article about slash careers.
If you’re not in the know, a slash career is where you make multiple income streams from different careers all at the
same time.
So basically a side hustle on steroids.
The article made the case that slash careers are becoming more and more mainstream, especially with millennials.
That lines up with what I’ve seen too.
There was a bloke who worked a few desks over from me who built a vintage watch company while holding down his banking job, then quit his job (clocked off?) and he’s now running his watch biz full time with much success (if the GQ
articles are to be believed).
That’s not the only example though.
Another colleague in my team quit the bank a few years back and in her goodbye email she plopped a cheeky link for her carpet website! Turned out she’d been
running a rugtastic business alongside her 9 to 5 (although “slash career” probably isn’t what you want to hear when you buy a carpet…)
But having a slash career doesn’t mean you need to quit your day job.
To my
mind, it’s more about giving yourself options.
A current colleague runs her own book club on Instagram.
A friend of mine who works in Real Estate started her own podcast interviewing high profile women in the
Real Estate Industry and built a bunch of useful new connections by doing so.
I’m also still in touch with some of my cohort from Michael Neil’s 7-month Genius Catalyst Certification and a merry mix of my classmates are coaching outside their day jobs (and inside their day jobs too actually) while still clocking in as a doctor, IT professional, barber, web
designer, chiropractor and so on.
And, of course, Yours Truly is flying the flag for the humble banker and rocking a 9 to 5 banking job while coaching clients, writing this newsletter, publishing a new book and running Mindset & Clarity workshops for the third time now.
Interestingly enough, more and more of my coachees are trying to nail the balance between their day job and extracurricular money-makers too.
And what this tells me is that we’re not in the 1980s any more.
The halcyon days of being a company man or company woman have been consigned to history.
That’s not to say a company man or woman won’t raise a suspicious eyebrow at the idea of a slash career.
But soon enough, those stuck-in-the-muds will be clunking along like a stubborn fax machine in a wifi world as the dam bursts open and millennials, GenZs, Gen Alphas & Gen Betas gleefully slash away at their day jobs and whatever passion projects light them up.
And honestly I think that’s
the key point.
Slash careers aren’t just a way to potentially top up your coffers.
They’re not just a way to increase your network, round out your skill set and protect yourself from the looming AI-pocalyspe.
They’re also a way to indulge in your interests, follow your passions and bring more joy & fun into your life.
In fact, it’s getting to the point where if you’re NOT juggling your day job with writing a book, bagging your yoga
qualifications, running weekend photography workshops, opening a store on Etsy, starting a podcast, finding freelance clients, taking on coaching clients or even building the next big thing, you’re leaving a source of fun, energy and opportunity on the table.
The lines between work & play, job & side hustle and career & slash career are blurring
into one big freestyle career fiesta.
The options really are endless and nowadays it's a case of choose your own adventure.
This is why I believe that if you’re a gainful employee, there’s never been a more important
time than now, in 2025, to learn how to find clarity.
I mean the clarity to spot your next best move, to pick your adventure with confidence and to know what success looks like to you.
Or to put it
simply:
The clarity to live a life you love.
As it so happens, I’m putting together a small group coaching program all about finding clarity.
During the program we’ll explore ways to cut through the noise in your head, make decision-making lighter & faster and tap into your own sense of direction, all while releasing more fun, energy and opportunity in the process.
I’ve been writing about this program for the last couple of
days.
Today’s the last day I’m writing about it.
If this sounds like your kind of thing, please hit reply and I’ll tell you more.
Thank you
