The reason is simple:
I had a handful of good ideas for this newsletter. But only a handful.
I thought if I used up all my good ideas, I’d struggle to find new ones. And I’d be scraping the
bottom of the idea barrel just as the newsletter picked up steam.
Of course, this is a typical scarcity mindset.
A mindset which says that good ideas are finite, that they must be rationed and that sharing these ideas will
leave me with less rather than opening the door to more.
Now I’ve written this daily missive for over two and a half year, I’ve seen this isn’t how it works.
Instead, ideas are like pears on a pear tree where every time
you pick a pear, two pears grow back.
And every pear which grows back is plumper, juicier and riper than the pear you’ve just picked.
(hence Charles Dickens' famous Fagin line “you’ve got to pick a pear tree or
two”).
I know the bean counters and bureaucrats will shake their head at the thought of this magical, mystical, metaphorical pear tree.
But this isn’t woo-woo, fairy land nonsense.
This is actually how it works.
The Lightbulb King and idea junkie Thomas Edison once wrote this:
Ideas come
from space. This may seem astonishing and impossible to believe, but it is true. Ideas come from out of space.
That hits the nail on the head.
If you hoard your ideas for a rainy day, no wonder your ideas won’t
flow.
You need to USE those ideas to create the space for bigger, better & bolder ideas.
Anyway, it took me a while to see this.
But the more ideas I use when I write about personal development and how our minds work, the more cool ideas I have, the more ideas pop up in unexpected places, the more connections I make between seemingly random & unconnected concepts, the more I find myself drawn in and the more opportunities which open up.
This is why I could write daily emails for the rest of my life.
Not saying I’ll do that.
But it won’t be a lack of ideas which stops me.
In case you’re wondering, this *idea* doesn’t just apply to writing.
It’s relevant for ALL parts of life.
Take your career
as an example.
Are you delaying hitting send on an important email until the time is right?
Are you waiting to pitch your proposal, thinking you’ll only get one chance?
Are you holding off making a big, bold move until the perfect moment (going for a promotion, asking for a pay rise)?
My assertion?
Opportunities multiply when you TAKE them. Not when you wait to take them.
Just like ideas.
i.e. I don’t want to hold onto my good ideas. I want to use them as quickly as possible!
Bottom line:
You don’t need to hold back, play it safe or wait for permission.
Instead, there
are infinite ideas, opportunities and possibilities waiting for you to grab hold of right now!
