I woke up yesterday to find my phone full of alerts.
Turned out that Donald Trump had photobombed the Chelsea football team’s medal ceremony at the Club World Cup Final in New Jersey,
U.S. of A.
If you somehow missed the press coverage, Trump managed to insert himself right slap bang in the middle of the team photo while grinning away like a Cheshire Cat.
Cue photoshops of Trump celebrating the Chicago
Bulls’ 1990 Championship victory, Michael Phelps’ Olympic gold medals and even England's 1966 World Cup win,
Personally, I thought the whole episode was hilarious.
I’d also like to thank Trump for giving me an excuse
to write an email about unwelcome guests sticking their nose in where they don’t belong.
The unwelcome guests I’m referring to?
Our unwelcome thoughts. They’re no different to Trump hogging the spotlight when he wasn’t
wanted.
In fact, the Chelsea players’ reaction to this unwelcome guest was PERFECT.
There were a few baffled looks…
A few head-tilts…
There was Chelsea captain Cole Palmer wondering “What’s he doing?”...
And then the players ignored Trump and got on with celebrating.
So what if we treated scary or anxious thoughts the same way?
i.e. with a sense of suspicion, bemusement and maybe even a disbelieving shake of the head? Then paid that thought no more attention?
When we stop trying to change our thoughts, analyse them, play them on repeat, fight against them, follow them down rabbit holes, control them or think more positively about them, they lose their grip.
There’s nothing for those thoughts to latch onto.
And just like Trump sloped off to find another photo opp, those thoughts will slope off too.
Of course, this is easier said than done.
Most of us have been taught to take our thoughts seriously our whole lives. We've been conditioned to believe that if we're thinking something, it must be important.
But what if there was a completely different way to relate to your thinking?
A way that “trumps” all those mental gymnastics?
(yes, I went there)
This is the exact understanding that freed me from trying to solve my overthinking with
more thinking for at least a couple of decades.
Nowadays there’s just peace of mind as I watch my mental chatter come and go.
Not all the time mind you.
But it's like chalk and cheese vs the bad old days.
