I once heard movie star Jim Carrey share a warning story about the perils of seeking fame and success in the glitzy world of Hollywood.
Yes, not something most of us lose much sleep over. My own fleeting brush with showbiz stardom was about 30 years ago. That’s when my left hand was broadcast across the UK on the cult classic kid’s
TV Show “Live and Kicking” as I waved it past John Cleese’s face during his chat with Zoe Ball.
A true blink-and-you’d-miss-it Hollywood moment.
Anyway, Jim’s warning applies just as much to the corporate
world.
In fact, I’d argue it applies even more so, given the millions of 9to5ers working their way up the org chart and hoping success will lead them to the promised land.
Jim’s short story goes like this…
When he was a young whippersnapper, Jim made himself a plan:
Get rich, get famous, then kick back and enjoy life.
To his credit, Jim pulled off parts 1 & 2 with a string of hits like Dumb & Dumber, The Mask, Bruce Almighty and the arthouse favourite, Sonic the Hedgehog.
By his mid-30s, Jim was one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, earning massive wonga and living the jet-set lifestyle.
But instead of feeling settled and fulfilled, Jim ended up feeling lost, low and depressed.
He’s on record as saying “I wish everyone could get rich and famous and have everything they ever dreamed of so they can see it’s not the
answer.”
I’ve been there myself.
Not the rich and famous jet-setting version, but certainly the corporate equivalent:
Work hard, get promoted and get the title. Then breathe easy once I'd "made it".
But just like getting rich and famous isn’t the answer, I’m not so sure that promotions and titles are the answer either. Not if the question you’re asking is “how do I earn the right to relax?” or “how do I build a life where I don’t have
to worry”?
Not because there’s anything good or bad about building a career.
If you want to build a career, go ahead and build a career. Build it because you love the work, you enjoy the challenge or you want to get
better at what you do.
But if you’re building your career to earn the right to relax, you’re looking in the wrong place.
You won’t find the specs you’re wearing by searching all over the house. And nor will you find
relaxation or a worry-free life at the end of the corporate ladder.
Having said all that, there IS a way to “switch on” that very same relaxation and peace of mind.
Best of all it has diddly squat to do with your job, your
job title or your reputation in Hollywood.
This is where my coaching comes in.
In fact, my coaching is tailor made for anyone ready to find more freedom and fulfilment right here, right now without upgrading their job
title or snagging their next promotion.
