Today I’m channelling my inner Mystic Meg and taking a peek into my sparkly crystal ball.
If you’re looking for next week’s lottery numbers, you’re in the wrong place.
But if you’re on the hunt for a bit more peace of mind, keep reading. This email might just be the winning ticket.
In fact, that’s Prophecy #1 right there:
By the time you’ve finished reading this email, you’ll feel calmer than you do right now.
Now, maybe I’m being a bit bold with this prophecy.
After all, it
never fails to leave me baffled at just how often we all project into the future despite being really, REALLY bad at predicting what’s going to happen tomorrow, let alone what will happen next week, month or year.
But predict we do.
All the time.
Hence Prophecy #2:
Despite how bad we all are at predicting the future, in the next 24 hours your brain will cook up some future drama that will never actually happen.
Now, this prophecy might well prompt the question…
If we’re all so bad at predicting the future, why am I making a bunch of predictions in this very email?
Well, there IS a way to correctly predict the future.
There’s a famous quote attributed to both Abraham Lincoln and the management theorist Peter Drucker which goes “The best way to predict the future is to create it”.
Given how many quotes are incorrectly attributed, it was probably neither of these chaps who said it.
But it doesn’t really matter. The quote still holds true.
Check this out for instance:
In a 1968 study by American psychologist Robert Rosenthal, a bunch of teachers were told that certain students were “intellectual bloomers”. In reality, these students had been selected at random. But they ended up performing better than their classmates because teachers gave them more attention and
support.
i.e. the teachers didn’t predict the future. Instead, they created the future with their beliefs and actions.
My treasured Red Devils, Manchester United FC, are trying a similar
trick.
The CEO Omar Berrada recently announced “Project 150”. This is Man Utd’s bold goal of winning the Premier League by the year 2028.
Now, you might think there’s more chance of hell freezing over than Man Utd
winning the Premier League in 2028 and you’d probably be right (although things are looking up after the weekend)
But I do wonder if the best way to get there is to act like it’s going to happen.
To behave right
now as if that future is inevitable.
It’s nuanced though. It’s not predicting the win or waiting for the future to show up. It’s more about setting a direction, acting in line with that direction and behaving as if the future is already here.
Anyway, enough examples.
All this leads to Prophecy #3:
The moment you start creating your future instead of predicting it is the moment you’ll start living the life you really want to
live.
As it happens, this last prophecy underpins a new coaching program I’m about to launch. This program will be the clearest expression yet of what my coaching is all about and I can't wait to share it with you.
If my
emails speak to you, I think you’re going to love this new program.
More details on the way soon.
In the meantime, the only thing I will say is that this program will not be cheap. So please don’t start your Christmas
shopping just yet.
Oh, and obviously:
If you’d rather predict imaginary dramas than create a fulfilling future, this program won't be your cup of tea.
Otherwise?
Keep your eyes peeled on my emails for more info.
To fulfilment,
Tom
