The Oxford English Dictionary defines retirement as “the period of your life after you have stopped work”.
To my mind, that sounds a bit like saying “the period of your life after you’ve stopped laughing with your friends” or “the period of your life after you’ve stopped sipping your morning coffee”.
I’m not planning on these EVER being periods of my life!
Look:
When you’re doing what matters to you, when work
isn’t something you endure but something that nourishes you instead, when you’re so swept up in your craft, your contribution or your calling that retiring from that is akin to no longer laughing with your pals or slurping a double espresso, then it makes no sense to retire.
Why on earth would you retire from your holy grail?
Think about this for a moment:
Every now and then I’ll find myself with a free evening or a few free hours on a Sunday. And when I mention to a friend or colleague that I’m writing or coaching, I sometimes get a raised eyebrow, head tilted to one
side and a slightly baffled look as if to say “Why are you choosing to WORK in your free time Tom?!”
But it’s not work to me. Not in the clock-watching, inbox-chasing, Powerpoint-polishing sense.
I GET to
work.
I get to do something I love. Something that matters and feels authentically me.
I used to see my coaching and writing as what I did around work. But now, my banking job feels like what I do around my coaching
and writing (especially as I’ve found ways to weave both of them into my job).
So the coaching and writing are the real work.
The Father of Motivation Wayne Dyer would’ve called my newsletter and coaching my
“music”.
And a huge part of my music is helping people to find THEIR music. The projects or activities that set their souls on fire and from which it would be absolutely bonkers to stop or retire from.
In fact, the music
inside me is what inspired my new program, The Music Inside You.
Yes, we’re getting a bit circular here. But honestly, what better way to play my music than by helping you play yours?
Truth is, no-one needs to find their
music. There’s no gold star or moral high ground for those who do.
All I’m saying is once you find your music, life starts to sing with a joy, energy and fulfilment that cannot be found when you’re going through the motions or living your life on autopilot.
If that sounds like something you’d love, my program could be the spark that gets you playing.
When I hit send on this email, there were only 6 hours left to join the program.
