Yesterday, I wrapped up the promo for my new coaching program, The Music Inside You.
I sent a lot of emails to promote the program. And while I was in full blown email writing mode, something interesting happened.
I’d fired up my laptop ready to put fingers to keyboard on one of the promo emails, but the words weren’t flowing. Even though the email was mapped out in my head, it wasn’t clicking. Something was missing.
So what did I do?
I switched to my faithful sidekick.
That’s right. I fired up YouTube.
The first thing that popped up was a trailer for Ryan Gosling’s new space adventure movie, so I pressed
play.
Pretty good trailer.
Then I pressed play on a trailer for Guillermo Del Toro’s new Frankenstein re-make.
That looked really good.
So good, in fact, that I fired up a new window, loaded up faithful sidekick #2 (Wikipedia) and searched for the Frankenstein movie so I could read more about it.
Lo and behold, halfway down the page I came across a quote from Guillermo that was PERFECT for the email I was wrestling with.
So I quickly flipped back to my Word Doc and banged out the email then and there.
Now, here’s the funny thing about this:
Not so long ago, I would’ve given myself a heap of shit for procrastinating on YouTupedia instead of being productive and cranking out some writing. That would’ve got me all in my head and led to a spiral of scrolling and guilt.
I’ve got much better at not giving myself shit for stuff like this, which is nice.
But now I’m wondering if I should be rewarding myself for procrastinating instead!
Or at least rewarding myself for letting my curiosity guide the way.
If I’d resisted my harmless desire to flick to YouTube, I never would’ve ended up on Wikipedia. And if I hadn’t ended up on Wikipedia, I never would’ve found that quote from Guillermo. And if I hadn’t found that quote, I never would’ve flicked straight back to my
Word Doc and boshed out a great little email.
It’s a neat reminder of how life can flow when we don’t resist our instincts.
Even the instincts we judge.
My instinct right now?
To link you to that same Frankenstein trailer.
Seems only right to follow my own advice:

Perhaps it will spark something for you too.
Have a great weekend.
To fulfilment,
