One of the biggest lies that’s drummed into us from the age we’re knee-high to a grasshopper is that success is what leads to fulfilment.
But it really doesn’t matter how much wonga you have tucked away in your piggy bank, how high you climb the greasy career ladder or how impressive your job title is.
If you think success is what will lead to a happy, peaceful and fulfilling life, you’re barking up the wrong magic money tree.
No-one tells you this when you’re growing up. Your teachers don’t tell you (they’re more interested in your
grades). Your peers don’t tell you (they probably think success leads to fulfilment too). Your parents might not even tell you (they’re more interested in your safety than your fulfilment).
But once you’ve had enough “success”, the truth might start to dawn on you.
It might start to look like the means and the ends don’t tally. That success really isn’t the golden goose that society dresses it up to be.
When this happens, you have a choice.
You can double down, push harder, climb another rung, shoot for a pay rise, upgrade your job title, take on more work and keep grinding until you DO finally reach the promised land.
Lots of people play this game for their whole careers. What they tend to find is that real satisfaction is always one more promotion or pay rise
away. And as they drive their 4x4s, take their annual ski trips to Val d'Isère and build their loft conversions, they still feel restless, flat and unfulfilled. Even though they might never tell anyone that’s how they feel. After all, it’s not the sort of thing that gets brought up at your neighbour’s summer BBQ.
The second option is to pause and take a
look at where fulfilment REALLY comes from.
Needless to say, I enjoy a good glass of wine, a fancy meal or a week in Las Vegas as much as the next man or woman.
I enjoy doing well at work too.
But I’m clear that none of these are where my peace of mind or fulfilment come from.
If you feel like success has given you lots of nice things but not the fulfilment you’re looking for, I can help you find it.
