I was scrolling on Dimstagram a couple of days ago when I came across a post showcasing a new bar in Tokyo.
I LOVE Tokyo. I’ve visited three times and I'd be very surprised if I don't take another trip with Lauren and Baby Grundy in tow.
I also happen to love bars.
So I started swiping through the post. Turns out this bar is a bit different to your usual watering hole.
The name of the bar is
転職相談. In English, that means “Job-Changing Consultation Bar”. The idea is that anyone thinking of quitting their job can pop along to the bar, grab a drink and chat with the barman all about their career dilemma.
One article I found with a quick Google described it like this:
There’s a lot of mental space between “I love my job and want to stay in it forever” and “I hate my job and want out ASAP.” When you’re somewhere between those two extremes, it can be hard to find impartial advice or an experienced ear.
Yes, it sounds like the barman wrote the
article himself.
But actually, I experienced something similar back in the dark ages of my banking career.
It wasn’t that I couldn’t find impartial advice or an experienced ear though. It was more that I didn’t think
anyone could relate to my situation.
After all, I had a really good job! I was well paid, I was climbing the career ladder and I’d had plenty of “success” by most people’s standards. Yet I was very stressed & very miserable. And the last thing I wanted was to be accused of being ungrateful for having doubts, or to be told I was mad for thinking of
quitting, or even that I should just quit tomorrow if I wasn’t happy.
It was an absolute mess of thoughts & feelings and I didn't think anyone would get how complicated it was.
What this does mean, though, is that I
know the confusion of “do I stay or do I go” from every angle. I also know how it feels to have your stomach churn on a Sunday evening and to lie wide awake at 3am going over and over the same old pros & cons.
All of which brings me to the strong stuff:
If you’d like a job-changing career consultation with someone who’s wrestled their own career conundrums and found a way through them, I have an offer for you.
I’ll grab a beer and you grab your tipple of choice. Then we fire up a Zoom call, sip our tasty beverages and chat about your career quandary.
To be clear:
I won’t offer you any advice or suggest any next steps. But I will create a space where you can think out loud, without judgement, and untangle any mental spaghetti which is stopping you seeing your career conundrum as
clearly as you could be.
I have two spaces open at the bar for this career consultation session:
Monday 16th February, 7.15pm UK Time
Tuesday 17th February, 7.15pm UK Time
The cost is £72 and the call will last as long as our drink lasts (I’m guessing 30 – 45 mins).
As you might’ve gathered, this is a niche offer. This is only for you if you've got a genuine career dilemma on your hands. And yes, I’m aware that the evening in the UK might be first thing in the
morning in your part of the world and perhaps you don’t want to be cracking open a cold one at 4.15am.
So if the times don’t work, just skip this offer.
But if you DO have a career dilemma and you CAN make one
of these slots, my suggestion is to click the link, book the session and I’ll be in touch straight after.
If the link doesn’t work when you click, it means someone else has beaten you to the rum punch.
To
fulfilment,
Tom
